The American Nystagmus Network, Inc. (ANN) held its sixth biennial conference from July 17 through 19, 2009 at the Pittsburgh Marriott Renaissance Hotel, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Conference Agenda
Friday, July 17
- 1:00-5:00: Vendor exhibits, Logo Item Sales, Silent Auction
- 5:00: Conference kickoff – Welcome, presentation from our sponsors and opening remarks and introductions of special guests (ANN Board, Dr. Rich Hertle, Presenters, volunteers, thanks vendors) Conference overview of the agenda. w/ Opening Remarks, Alan Burstein, President, ANN, Inc.
- 6:00: Dinner
Saturday, July 18
- 7:00-8:00: Continental Breakfast
- 8:15-9:45: Welcome Opening keynote – Dr. Dell’Osso – Presentation of his research work with nystagmus. He and Dr. Hertle have pioneered much of the recent research in Nystagmus. Dr. Dell’Osso has nystagmus as well.
- 10:00 – 11:30: Breakout Sessions
- Erica Hacker, O.D. –A review of the types of low vision devices now available including optical and video magnification. Explanation of why some devices are more suitable for nystagmus. Discussion on how people use the devices for school, work and everyday activities. Several devices will be available for demonstration.
- Chuck Huss – Low vision Driving: Misconceptions vs. Reality – Chuck is a repeat favorite from past conferences.
- Bill Duck – ANNBoard Member and High School Teacher Talks about IEP/504Low vision Driving: Misconceptions vs. Reality – Chuck is a repeat favorite from past conferences.
- 11:45-12:30: Lunch
- 12:30-1:00: Lunch Presentation – Mike Arm will discuss and demonstrate some of Windows capabilities for an improved viewer experience.
- 1:15-2:30: Breakout Sessions
- Laurie Glaude – ANNBoard Member and HR specialist will discuss the American With Disabilities Act and Job Interviewing
- Matt Case and a representative from Dr. Hertle’s office– Discussion on Insurance
- Chuck Huss –Updates in Bioptic Driving: U.S.A. and Abroad
- 2:30-2:45pm: Children’s Support Group (for children) Ms. Jayne Gordon, MSW, LICSW A member of ANN and a parent of a child with Nystagmus will lead a workshop for children with Nystagmus.
- 2:45-3:45: Panel Questions and Answers
- 4:00-6:00: Tour of Dr. Hertle’s lab facilities
- 7:05-11:00: Pittsburgh Pirates Ballgame and Fireworks
Sunday, July 19
- 8:00-9:00: Continental Breakfast
- 9:00-10:00: Members bi-annual meeting, President’s message, Treasurer’s report, Goals of ANN for the upcoming year (scholarships, list, membership drives etc.), elections of new board members, additional business (comments, questions, suggestions etc. from attendees)
- 10:15-11:30: Panel Discussion, Living with Nystagmus – Laurie Glaude, Mike Arm, Bob Unferth, Drew Kolody, and Kelly Smith
- 11:30: Conference close
