I was taught that obstacles are just unique opportunities. My sister was born with Duane’s Syndrome, an eye condition where her eye does not move. I was born two years later and my parents were overjoyed to see that both my eyes moved. The problem was that my eyes never stopped moving. I was diagnosed with Nystagmus at 7 months old.
I can’t remember a time where kids haven’t laughed at my eyes and said, “Make your eyes stop wiggling!” In high school, everyone was trying so hard to be alike, and I realized it might be ok to be different. I was struggling to find my place.
Everyone is handed adversity and hardships, but the way you choose to handle those hardships is what makes you unique.
“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” I decided that creating my own club where I mentor elementary and middle school kids on the importance of being themselves would be powerful. I have excelled academically… but more importantly, I have made a difference.
